Yedla Employee Spotlight: Elaine Powell

For the next installment of our Employee Spotlight Series, we sat down with Elaine Powell, Vice President of Operations at Yedla.
Elaine has been with Yedla for four years, and she's spent nearly four decades in hospitality, building revenues, teams, leaders, and helping hotels work through just about every challenge the industry can hand them.
What became clear during our conversation is Elaine doesn't just love hotels. She loves helping people and business grow.
"The best thing about hotels is that no two days are ever the same."
One of her earliest roles was at a hotel near NASA in Houston, a property with a nightclub, a marina, and a steady stream of travelers from all over the world coming to see Mission Control. The hotel hosted guests' celebrating the 25th anniversary of the lunar landing, including Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong. The Hilton NASA Clear Lake is also where she found the part of the work that still drives her: the puzzle of figuring out how to make a hotel perform better than the one down the road.
Today she brings that same instinct to the Yedla Portfolio, creating the culture of building sales and revenue, extending exceptional experiences to our guests, developing the next generation of hoteliers, and growing the value of the assets in her team's care. Her day touches everything from revenue to maintenance. When we asked her what a typical day looks like, she laughed:
"The best way I've described my job is that we're trying to prevent forest fires."

The systems, the follow-up, the early phone call all exist to stay ahead of the surprises before they become problems.
And almost all of it runs through people. On any given day she's mentoring a first-time general manager, helping a team through a change, recruiting someone she doesn't have a seat for yet, or planning for the growth she knows is coming.
What sets Elaine apart is her ability to stay in the weeds and zoom out at the same time, not only on performance, but on people. Who has potential. Who's ready for more. Who simply needs someone to see it in them first.
"We're always asking, 'Who's next?'"
Ask her how she handles it all, and the answer is honest:
"It depends."
Not as a way out of the question, but as a philosophy. Every building is different, every manager is at a different point, and the real skill is reading which is which.
"Everyone has to feel personally responsible for the success of a hotel, or it will not work."
Elaine and Yedla ask team members about their commitment to success, a small change in language (learned from one of many mentors over the last forty years) that puts ownership exactly where Elaine believes it belongs. That same belief shapes how she grows people: she invests her time in the ones who want to learn.

"Technical skills can be taught. Hospitality is harder, and there are some things you just can't teach."
That conviction has shaped her whole career, and there's real rigor underneath it.
The discipline is always in service of the same thing: growing hotels, strong teams, and getting the next leader ready before the seat opens.

🐾 Meet Birdie
This spring, Elaine added a new member to the household: a puppy named Birdie. She'd been looking since April and figured she'd know the right one when she saw her, and she did.
Welcome Birdie to the extended Yedla family.
